A recent study reveals that Mongolia’s social welfare programs may unintentionally discourage women’s participation in the labor force. Conducted by M. Namuunaa, a specialist at the Tax Policy Department of the Ministry of Finance, the research explores key determinants of labor force participation with a special emphasis on gender disparities. The findings show that, when controlling for other variables, women are 12.8 percentage points less likely to be employed than men. Additionally, women receiving child benefits are 12.1 percentage points less likely to participate in the workforce, suggesting that current welfare policies may need to be reevaluated through a gender-responsive lens.
